Final score: 1-0 The travelling green and white army needed an 82nd minute strike by John Scarborough to break the deadlock and snatch all three points. An incredibly wet opening day saw Braintree probably shade the possession, but when it came to the crunch they couldn't break down the U's defence. At the other end the Iron's 'keeper had relatively little to do and was only beaten when Michael Johnson unselfishly headed back to Scarborough to finish when he could've attempted to score himself. U’s v Havant & Waterlooville (15/08/06) Final score: 0-1 Sutton's first home game of the season ended in disappointment, as Havant took all three points with a second half goal from a goal mouth scramble. Neither side really looked likely to score as both created very few chances around the box, but when the opportunity arose the Hawks took it. Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, M Gray, N Lampton, M Gordon (Z Graham), R Crockford, C Gibbs, S Douglas (P Fear), M Johnson. U’s v Basingstoke (19/08/06) Final score: 3-3 Sutton will feel like they could've taken all 3 points at the death in this match after coming from behind twice. The U's got on the board first when Matt Gray connected with a looping cross at the back post. He volleyed the ball straight into the ground and it then bounced up right in front of the keeper into the top of the net. The Dragons then scored two very similar goals. On both occasions Phil Wilson did well to save the initial shot only for the rebounds to be put away by a 'Stoke player. The second half saw a bright start for the U's and they soon found themselves level when Peter Fear connected well at the back post to send a powerful header over the line. The yellows then felt like all their hard work to get level was undone when a bizarre Refereeing decision gave the visitors a penalty. A Basingstoke forward was closing in on Phil Wilson, he then lifted the ball over Phil who was by now spreading himself to try and narrow the angle, the lob went wide and the 'Stoke player then collided with Wilson. The ref then pointed to the spot and didn't even book Wilson for the apparent infringement. Basingstoke put themselves ahead again from the spot. The U's battled hard to try and find the equaliser, and eventually Neil Lampton chose an excellent time to score his first league goal. A superb right footed volley was sent screaming across the face of the goal into the opposite far corner. With the match heading towards a draw John Scarborough could've pinched all three points but managed to send his, at full stretch, sliding shot back to the wing that the cross had come from. Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, M Gray, N Lampton, M Gordon (R Crockford), P Fear, C Gibbs (E Akuamoah), Z Graham (S Douglas), M Johnson. U’s v Eastbourne Borough (19/08/06) Final score: 0-2 A mid-week trip to the seaside held no joy for the U's as a goal in each half gave the Sports all three points. The U's were unfortunate to go in at half time a goal down but the second half was an all together different story. After the break Eastbourne stamped their authority on the game and eventually their second goal came and there was no way back for Sutton. Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, M Gray, N Lampton, R Crockford (M Gordon), P Fear, C Gibbs (Z Graham), S Douglas (E Akuamoah), M Johnson. Subs (not used): M Maan Goals: - Eastbourne: L Hook, D Baker, N Jenkins, M Smart (J Keehan), J Dohnal, M Pullan, J Lovett, P Armstrong, S Ramsay, V Dolista (P Harding), M Crabb. Subs (not used): K Hemsley, L Newman, D McArthur Goals: Smart (44), Armstrong (73)
U’s v Salisbury City (26/08/06) Final score: 0-1 Another tale of two halves. In the first Sutton were a match for the home team and created several useful openings but unfortunately never really tested the keeper. The second half saw the Whites immediately make an impact and a well placed shot by Luke Prince beat Phil Wilson and went in off the upright. Salisbury then piled on the pressure and should've finished 3 or 4 goals to the good apart from a couple of good saves from Wilson and saw generally poor finishing. The U's livened up in the last few minutes of the game but it was too little too late. Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, M Gray, N Lampton, R Crockford, M Gordon, C Gibbs (E Akuamoah), R Harris (S Douglas), M Johnson. Subs (not used): M Maan, P Fear, Z Graham Goals: - Salisbury: 1 R Clarke, J Bass, J Beswetherwick, A Cook, T Bond, T Widdrington, W Turk, L Prince, R Matthews (P Sales), M Tubbs (D McGregor), A Haddow (L Cockerill). Subs (not used): M Holmes, S Browne Goals: Prince (47)
U’s v Fisher Athletic (28/08/06) Final score: 2-2 After going behind to a penalty in the second minute the U's always looked up against it and this was compounded when the visitors went two up. Sutton then pushed hard and were rewarded when Lewis Gonsalves managed to force the ball in after John Scarborough's lob hit the bar. Things then swung in the U's favour more when Fisher had a defender sent off for his second bookable offence. With renewed optimism the U's came out after half time and looked for the equaliser. This eventually came when Richard Harris rose to head home a Michael Johnson free kick. From then on it was pretty much all Sutton and Carl Gibbs was unlucky on several occasions not to open his account. The U's will be pleased to have come from behind again, but like the Basingstoke game earlier this season the three points just eluded them. Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, E Akuamoah, M Gray (M Gordon), N Lampton, R Crockford, C Gibbs (S Douglas), R Harris (Z Graham), M Johnson. Subs (not used): M Maan, P Fear Goals: Gonsalves (38), Harris (54) Fisher: - Goals: Watts (2 pen), Griffiths (17)
