2006/07 MATCH REPORTS

2006/07 Reports:
U’s v Bishops Stortford (02/12/06)

Final score: 1-1

Early chances at both ends saw Matt Gray fire wide, after being put through by Warren McBean, and then at the other end Phil Wilson spread himself well to save a good one on one chance. The game then settled and apart from a fine full stretch save from Wilson the match almost reached half time without further incident. But with the first half drawing to a close Stortford conceded a free kick outside the area for a very late foul on Matt Gray. Ross Gaynor got the nod from the Referee to take the free-kick early and bent a shot against the far post, however Tony Quinton was on hand to volley in the rebound with literally the last touch of the half.
The second half was a scrappy affair as once again Sutton seemed to sit back too much in an attempt to ride out the second period. Stortford drew level from the spot after the U's conceded a penalty for handball. Later on the Ref wouldn't return the favour when Matt Gray was forcibly pushed off the ball in the visitor's box. The Yellow's almost saw themselves lose a third game on the trot to a last minute goal but Wilson's near post came to the rescue.

U’s v Hayes (09/12/06)

Final score: 4-0

On a cold December afternoon Sutton were looking to turn around the result from the last game of last season. The U's took the lead after 27 minutes when Tony Quinton met Matt Gray's deep cross and headed the ball back across the goal and in at the far post. Then with little more than five minutes to go in the half Warren McBean cut in from the left wing and sent a curling, dipping, shot into the top right hand corner. It was an absolute stunner of a goal! Shortly afterwards Sutton had a penalty shout turned down after John Scarborough flicked Richard Harris's long throw goalwards only for it to be handled off the line. Then came the real talking point of the game as Ross Gaynor was pushed in the face by Hayes's no. 3 literally a yard in front of the linesman. The referee only produced a yellow card for this sending off offence.
The second half saw Hayes waste several very good chances to get back into the game but at the other end the U's took theirs. Sutton's third came from a free kick that was launched into the box by Alan Bray. The ball eventually landed at McBean's feet who calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. The final goal was "shinned" in from 2 yards out by Scarborough after a Matt Gray corner was poorly dealt with. The result was flattering but the U's took the chances that came their way and Hayes didn't.

U’s v Farnborough (26/12/06)

Final score: 1-0

Sutton began their post festive fixtures with a well deserved win. Matt Gray did the honour of hitting the back of the net after some excellent work by Bashiru Alimi and Warren McBean out on the left. McBean was later denied a goal of his own for an unknown reason. This was after the Farnborough 'keeper had made a complete hash at attempting to claim a Tony Quinton header back across the box. McBean was then free to head in at the back post, only for it to then be disallowed.

Team: L Naughton, A Bray, L Gonsalves (R Gaynor), J Scarborough, R Palmer, B Alimi, T Quinton, M Gray, P Honey, R Harris, W McBean. Subs (not used): P Wilson, Z Graham, L Hall, E Akuamoah

U’s v Bognor (30/12/06)

Final score: 3-2

After losing a two goal lead it took a late Alan Bray goal to give the U's all three points. The first half saw little goal mouth action for either team. The only note worthy occurrences being Matt Gray clearing a goal bound effort off the line and Luke Gaynor being caught rather late, after a shot, in the box.
The second half was an altogether different affair as the wind grew stronger and the rain continued to lash down. Lewis Gonsalves gave the yellows the lead after the ball fell kindly to him at the back post. Tony Quinton doubled the lead after some good work to bring the ball under control, wrong foot his marker and then fire in from 6 yards out. The Rocks then began to put on some pressure looking for a way back into the game, It came when a cross from wide out on the left wing managed to elude Luke Naughton and fall in at the back post. From then on it was all Bognor as they surged forward again and again in an attempt to equalise. The Rocks did find the leveler as a left wing corner was headed home with minutes to go. Sutton then bounced straight back. Gray took the centre and proceeded to run 30 yards with the ball and for his efforts won a corner. The corner was swung in by Gray and eventually fell to Bray at the back post who somehow managed to shoot home, sending the U's fans nuts. The yellows then managed to play out the last few minutes of injury time to claim all three points.
