2006/07 MATCH REPORTS

2006/07 Reports:
U’s v Farnborough Town (01/01/07)

Final score: 0-4

Sutton were soundly beaten in the return of the Boxing Day fixture. The only Sutton highlights worth mentioning were a superb full stretch save by Luke Naughton, although we were already 3-0 down at that point, and a headed attempt late on that was cleared off the line. Apart from that 'Boro were 2-0 up at half time and doubled their score in the second, rain soaked, period.

U’s v Lewes (13/01/07)

Final score: 1-3

Sutton's visit to the redeveloping Dripping Pan was far from a memorable one. One down, six minutes in, after the ball squirmed under Luke Naughton the U's were soon two behind. Naughton failed to hold onto a cross and the ball slipped out for a corner. From the resulting semi-clearance a well struck volley from the edge of the area found the top right corner of Naughton's goal. The travelling U's support had to wait for the 37th minute for something to cheer about as Warren McBean latched onto a Matt Gray cross and pulled Sutton back into the match.
Gray had a couple of shots himself in the second half but neither stretched the Lewes 'keeper. Ross Gaynor, brought on for Richard Harris, almost hit the target with his first touch, but he volleyed slightly high and wide when a corner dropped kindly to him near the back post. With little over 20 minutes to go Lewes restored their two goal lead and in doing so killed off the game. All in all another disappointing display.

Team: L Naughton, A Bray, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, R Palmer, T Quinton, M Gray, P Honey, R Harris (R Gaynor), W McBean, B Alimi. Subs (not used): P Wilson, R Blackwell, E Akuamoah

U’s v Egham Town (23/01/07)

Final score: 3-2

The run in the Surrey Senior Cup came to an embarrassing early end after two goals in the last two minutes gave Egham a county cup scalp. Sutton initially went a goal behind when an effort from just outside of the box bobbled over the outstretched arms of Luke Naughton. The U's then managed to miss three or four good chances of their own, mostly headers.
Sutton were gifted a way back into the game when an Egham defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Matt Gray duly put the penalty away. The Yellows took the lead after a looping John Scarborough cross was poorly dealt with at the back post and as Warren McBean's (extremely) close range header came back off the post Zak Graham was on hand to slam the ball home. With little over ten minutes to go it seemed like the game was over, but the Egham heads didn't go down and they twice capitalised on some poor defending to advance into the next round.

Team: L Naughton, R Palmer, J Scarborough, L Gonsalves, A Bray, M Gray (E Akuamoah), P Honey (T Quinton), R Gaynor, B Alimi, R Harris (Z Graham), W McBean. Subs (not used): P Wilson

Goals: Gray (50, pen), Graham (83)

Egham: C Gooding, D Lucas (M Ottley), P Reed, N Patel, L Taylor, M Sims, A Foulser (M Postins), P Bennett, A Ottley (S Graham), L Coleman, M Moody. Subs (not used): D Lake, N Breslin

U’s v Welling (27/01/07)

Final score: 1-2

Just like the away fixture back in September, the U's didn't deserve to lose this match. Huge periods of sustained pressure and possession just couldn't be converted into goals. Welling opened the scoring after a break down the right saw the ball being pulled back to be easily slotted home. Sutton's heads didn't drop though with Richard Harris, Warren McBean and Ross Gaynor all causing trouble in and around the box.
The second half saw the Yellows come out looking the most likely to get on the score sheet. After a couple of genuine shouts for handball, Sutton's leveler eventually came via the hands of a defender. After Bashiru Alimi was brought down on the left wing, Gaynor whipped in a dangerous free kick. John Scarborough stooped at the near post to head it in, although the Welling player on the post tried his best to push it away with his hands. Sutton spent a vast amount of time in the second half camped in Welling's box but efforts from Alimi, Gaynor and Harris just couldn't find their way in. At the other end Gary Hogan did well to save a one on one chance but will certainly be disappointed that he didn't do more in the lead up to Welling's second.

Team: G Hogan, A Bray, L Gonsalves, J Scarborough, R Palmer, T Quinton, P Honey, B Alimi, R Harris, W McBean (J Henry), R Gaynor. Subs (not used): L Naughton, R Blackwell, E Akuamoah

Goals: Scarborough
