2008/09 MATCH REPORTS

2008/09 Reports:
U’s v Margate (13/01/09)

Final score: 2-0

Sutton's 2009 fixtures finally kicked off, after three consecutive postponements. The game was largely very forgettable with both teams wasting chances in front of goal. Matt Hann having the best of the early Sutton efforts. It all fell into place for the U's as the game was entering it's last few minutes. A charging Craig Dundas was hauled down outside the box and from the resulting free-kick Dean Palmer found himself in enough space to allow him to head home. To put the icing on the, undeserved, cake Gavin McCallum capitalised on a mix up between a Margate defender and the 'keeper to roll the ball into the unguarded net.

Team: P Nicholls, S Jackson, C Dundas, S McKimm, K El-Salahi, C Collins (G Heeroo), D Palmer, D Hughes, C Eribenne (B Dunn), S West, M Hann (G McCallum). Subs (not used): A Wilde, T Hughes.

U’s v Horsham (17/01/09)

Final score: 2-1

The U's took the lead in the first of two back to back games with the Hornets through debutant Jon Munday. Munday heading in Gavin McCallum's right wing corner. Sutton's opener came unexpectedly and was certainly against the general run of play. However, Horsham came in at the break all square after they too headed home from a corner. After the break Billy Dunn was brought on for Steve West and immediately started to cause Horsham trouble with his pace. The U's regained the league when McCallum once again turned provider, sending in an inch perfect cross for Billy Dunn to superbly volley. Dunn's shot flew into the top right hand corner of the goal and cannoned back out off of the stanchion. Sutton had a couple of chances to pull away, but couldn't finish them and at the other end the woodwork denied Horsham an equaliser. The game also saw Billy Dunn stretchered off after being caught by an overstretching defender, fortunately the young striker only suffered a gash on his leg and nothing worse.

Team: P Nicholls, S Jackson, J Munday, C Collins, A Bray, C Dundas, D Hughes, S McKimm (M Hann), D Palmer, S West (B Dunn)(C Eribenne), G McCallum. Subs (not used): A Wilde, G Heeroo.

Goals: Munday (16), Dunn (63)

U’s v Canvey Island (24/01/09)

Final score: 0-0

Not for the first time this season the U's didn't exactly play their best football, but on this occasion the last minute goal was controversially ruled offside. The first half saw few chances fall Sutton's way, with a volleyed effort from Billy Dunn and a shot from outside of the box by David Hughes posing the most risk. The second half again saw Canvey edging the possession, but Paul Nicholls was more than a match for the Seagull's strikers. At the other end Nicholls's opposing counterpart was also stopping all the U's had to offer, pulling off a great full stretch save when Gavin McCallum had most of the goal at his mercy and he was also in the right spot to catch Dean Palmer's re-directed header. The U's did eventually break the seal over the goal when Matt Hann's low driven cross was met on the run by David Hughes four yards out and fired in to the net. But there was to be no last minute snatch and grab raid of all three points and the U's were denied their 6th consecutive victory.

Team: P Nicholls, G Heeroo, J Munday, C Collins, J Erskine, C Dundas (S West), B Bingham (S McKimm), D Hughes, D Palmer, B Dunn (M Hann), G McCallum. Subs (not used): C Eribenne.

U’s v Horsham (27/01/09)

Final score: 1-1 FT, 2-3 AET

The U's bowed out of the league cup with an extra time loss to the Hornets. Horsham took the lead two minutes into the second half, but the Yellows were soon level after Simon Jackson was brought down very late inside in the box. Billy Dunn stepped up and duly put the ball the pass the 'keeper. The score remained at one a piece and so an extra thirty minuters were played. Horsham re-took the lead and then were pinned back again by another Billy Dunn penalty after he had been brought down by the 'keeper. However, Horsham then got a spot kick of their own and no further amount of pressure could drag the U's back in to the game.

Team: P Nicholls, G Heeroo, S Jackson, B Graham, J Munday, T Hughes, M Hann (B Dunn), B Bingham, C Eribenne (S West), D Palmer (C Dundas), G McCallum. Subs (not used): O Lubwama, J McLoughlin.

U’s v Billericay Town(31/01/09)

Final score: 0-1

It had to end eventually and today saw the end of the U's unbeaten home record. 'Ricay took the lead after Paul Nicholls couldn't quite keep both hands on a cross, which then saw the ball clipped back towards the centre of the box for a header into an unguarded net. The U's had a few of their own chances but the 'Ricay 'keeper was equal to Steve West's ferocious free-kicks and Gavin McCallum's headed effort. In the last five minutes Sutton had a good shout for a penalty turned down when it appeared that Craig Dundas was tripped. Minutes later Dundas managed to beat the 'keeper with a low drive but the woodwork stepped in to keep the ball out.

Team: P Nicholls, S Jackson (B Graham), C Collins, T Bond, J Munday, S McKimm (M Hann), D Palmer, D Hughes, C Dundas, S West (B Dunn), G McCallum
